good ‘ole 80’s flicks

Posted in Weblogs by phoenyx57 on February 23, 2009

Jareth: You remind me of the babe.
Goblin: What babe?
Jareth: The babe with the power.
Goblin: What power?
Jareth: The power of voodoo.
Goblin: Who do?
Jareth: You do.
Goblin: Do what?
Jareth: Remind me of the babe.
I was in a reminiscing mood over the weekend and decided to watch some good old flicks from the 80’s. Man, the above quote (from the movie Labyrinth) always makes me smile. it’s just so darn catchy. I remember being enamored by the movie when I was quite young. And the story of being swept into an adventure . . . well, it just got my imagination.

Which is probably the reason I also love the Goonies. Wonderful movie that. I could practically recite the script word for word.

I also found a copy of “Can’t Buy Me Love”. Definitely one of my all-time favorite movies. Dr. McDreamy wasn’t very dreamy back then, in fact he was probably the epitome of nerdy. But the movie had heart and better than expected acting from its actors. I wonder why Amanda Peterson stopped acting. Such a shame. She had such potential. And Seth Green was simply awesome as Dempsey’s 12-year old brother in this movie.

Next up, I’m planning to find a copy of ET, Neverending Story, Adventures in Babysitting, and the Breakfast Club. I love 80’s movies.

tlw episodes 6.04 and 6.05 thoughts

Posted in Weblogs by phoenyx57 on February 19, 2009

I like this show, despite the sometimes very contrived storylines, shitty writing, major character makeovers at a drop of a hat and overall soap opera-ish tendencies. It’s a guilty pleasure, I must admit. And I understand that they only have eight episodes to wrap up the final season. So, it’s not a surprise when the episodes seem rushed and slightly disjointed. I wish they’d give a slight hint of how much time has passed between episodes, though. The pace is giving me whiplash.

That said, if you watch TLW and haven’t watched the recent episodes, a word of warning, spoilers abound:

6.04: LEAVING LOS ANGELES

  • “WTF!” seems to be Alice’s mantra this season. She says it quite alot in the past few episodes.
  • I love the fact that two years later, Helena still can’t help herself when it comes to Dylan, angry or not. Nice move getting the business card without alerting the girls, Helena. British Bombshell FTW!
  • Shane is so not in love with Jenny.
  • Shane is most definitely still a little bit in love with Carmen. Love the “I don’t want to throw her away” comment when Jenny insisted on throwing away souvenirs from Shane’s exes.
  • Jenny turning Shane’s bedroom into an office. Hello! Welcome to the Crazy Jenny show . . . and so it begins . . .
  • Alice, Tash and Jamie . . . WTF is up with that?
  • I have to admit, I’ve never liked Bette, but I’m kinda liking her this season. That was a rather cute rambling about the Prop 8 thing. It almost sounded more Jennifer Beals rather than Bette hehehe . . .

6.05: LITMUS TEST

  • Yay! Angela Robinson(D.E.B.S. and Herbie: Fully Loaded) wrote and directed this episode, so I know it won’t all be bad. At the very least there will be some fun and better dialogue.
  • Hmm . . . every episode one of the girls develops an urge to kill Jenny and this time it’s Alice’s turn. I still think, Jenny killed herself, though. That, or put herself in a coma.
  • Lots of Helena screen time in this episode . . . love it!
  • The girls on a mission to test Dylan’s character . . . very over the top, yes, but these are the kinds of moments in the show that are kinda fun to watch. Kinda reminds me of the Lana “Sous chef” mission in Season 1.
  • Love Jenny impersonating Nikki’s manager and with Tina egging her on.
  • That is one hell of a security system for a night club.
  • I’ve always loved how Rachel Shelley acts intensity and vulnerability with her eyes. Her eyes and facial expression says a lot without her speaking a word. The scene of Helena watching Dylan being tested was just pure win.
  • The girls watching Nikki trying to seduce Dylan on the security system like they were watching a soap opera complete with popcorn and commentary on the dialogue. That was just too funny.
  • How funny was that when Alice dropped the popcorn bowl on the keyboards and the monitors went dark. Who knew Kit knew her way around computers? She didn’t seem so in control reading a simple text message a couple of episodes ago.
  • Okay . . . the love scene was . . . awkward. It was so freaking silent. There was absolutely no background music. Nothing. No sound at all. it was like watching something very, very private, very intimate moment, what with the camera going in and out of behind vases and candlelight. I couldn’t really watch all of it, but it was a powerful intense scene IMHO.
  • I love the end part, though. It looks promising for Dylan and Helena, but I watched the preview for the next episode and it looks like Jenny is up to her old crazy self again. It’s Helena’s turn to say: “I could kill you, Jenny Schecter!”

addicted to sims 2 freetime

Posted in Weblogs by phoenyx57 on February 15, 2009

I installed the Sims 2 (plus a few of its expansions) again a few weeks back. Man, have I missed playing this game! I’ve downloaded a sim version of Kara “Starbuck” Thrace (Katee Sackhoff) of Battlestar Galactica made by the wonderful HystericalParoxysm at MTS2 and have been playing her family. So far, she’s had two sets of twins, is into sports and cooking and is a Media Magnate hehehe. Here’s some pics of her kids:

Have I mentioned that I love the Seasons expansion pack? There’s weather in the Sims 2 now. And Sims 3 is apparently going to be released this year. I’ve seen a few vids of it and it looks great! The system requirements aren’t half bad either. i just need to upgrade my comps ram and vid card just a bit for it to work.

thoughts on TLW episode 6.03 LMFAO

Posted in Weblogs by phoenyx57 on February 3, 2009

If you watch TLW and haven’t seen the third episode yet . . . this post is full of spoilers. After watching the third episode of the season, I couldn’t help jot down a few thoughts:

  • LMFAO indeed.
  • Alice text messaging the gang was reminiscent of the Phone Tree scene in Season 4’s “Luck be a Lady”, which is no surprise as they’re both directed by Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S. & Herbie: Fully Loaded), who never fails to deliver the goods.
  • Shane and Jenny . . . sorry, but I’m not buying it. Jenny just brings the crazy and Shane has never learned how to say no.
  • Gotta love the girls’ reaction to Shane and Jenny. Best one is a contest between Alice, Helena and Bette. Alice’s face was just priceless and her “yeah . . . pftt!” line at overhearing Jenny’s “I want this to be different” line (I’m paraphrasing) was just so funny. Leisha Hailey has always had incredible comedic talent and this scene was just made of win. And her and Helena going “Ewww .  . gross” was just adorably funny. Bette . . . I’ve got to say has an infectious laugh and I laughed right along with her when she got the text message and laughed her ass off during a meeting.
  • I like Mia Kirshner, but I absolutely think Jenny is one of the nuttiest characters on TV, which if you think about it says quite a lot about Ms. Kirshner’s acting.
  • Phyllis’ confession to Bette was very funny. Worth watching just for Bette’s facial reactions. Who knew Jennifer Beals could do comedy.
  • Jodi is a f*cking smug biatch. Never liked her.
  • I didn’t hear the Eric Mabius (he played Tim, Jenny’s fiancee in Season 1) reference. When was that? I did get Shane’s “Better-than-I-expected good” as a nod to Leisha’s yogurt commercial, though.
  • Helena (Rachel Shelley) was not on screen a lot of the time, which was a real bummer. Dylan (Alex Hedison) was also not in the episode, but still managed to send flowers, which Helena promptly recycled. Methinks someone needs to work on their card writing skills.
  • As for the negative going missing . . . I think perhaps, Niki or Adele stole them.
  • I still think Jenny offed herself despite everyone finding a motive to kill her every episode, not that we’re going to get a resolution to that mystery as apparently Ilene Chaiken has no intention of revealing the killer’s identity. Either she knows and is not sharing or has absolutely no idea and is just pulling crap out of her ass.
  • What is it with Bette’s clothes? Is she auditioning for a “Pirates of Penzance” remake?
  • The final scene at Kit and Helena’s new club was just fun. The girls all together at the end of the day and laughing their asses off despite being fired, accused of theft and all the crap that happens regularly in TLW land.

I can’t wait for episode 4!

Here’s a clip of one of my favorite scenes in in the entire show. It’s the basketball game in season 4, plus a behind the scenes look in the second clip:

movie meme

Posted in Weblogs by phoenyx57 on February 2, 2009

Just a very boring monday . . .

1. Name a movie you’ve seen more than ten times.
The Sound of Music, Goonies, D.E.B.S., RENT

2. Name a movie you’ve seen multiple times in the theater.
None. I usually watch a movie multiple times on our dvd player.

3. What actor/actress makes you more inclined to see a movie?
I’m more interested in the plot of a movie. Seeing a favorite actor/actress will just get me interested in reading up on the movie, but if the plot sucks, I still won’t watch it.

4. What actor/actress makes you less likely to see a movie?
Can’t think of anyone as I’m more prone to looking at the story/plot rather than the cast.

5. What movie are you able to quote from?
The Sound of Music, Goonies, D.E.B.S., RENT to name a few

6. What musical do you know all the lyrics to?
Sound of Music, RENT, Wicked, Avenue Q

7. What movie can you sing along with?
RENT, The Sound of Music, Annie, Oliver

8. What movie would you recommend that everyone should see?
The Sound of Music (definite must watch), RENT (only for the open-minded, though),

9. What movie do you own?
I own lots movies, though, I’ve taken to just watching online nowadays instead of buying.

10. Which actor from another medium has surprised you with his/her acting chops?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

11. Have you ever seen a movie at a drive-in?
There are no drive-ins where I live.

12. Ever make out at a drive-in?
See above

13. Is there a movie you meant to see, but haven’t?
Silence of the Lambs and Being John Malkovich . . . yeah, I still haven’t watched these two, but I really want to.

14. Have you ever walked out of a movie?
Out of a movie house? Never. Walked out on a movie playing in our living room? Lots of times.

15. What movie made you cry?
RENT, Spielberg presents Taken, the first segment of If These Walls Could Talk 2, there are others, but I can’t remember from the top of my head.

16. Popcorn?
Yes, please . . . can I have some soda, too?

17. How often do you go to the movies?
Not so much anymore. Not since the emergence of Youtube and Surfthechannel

18. Last movie you saw in a theater?
The last movie I remember seeing in the cinema house was I think Zorro.

19. Favorite genre?
Sci-fi, indie films, musicals

20. What was the first movie you saw?
Annie

21. What movie do you wish you hadn’t seen?
Boys Don’t Cry . . . not because it was bad. It was actually quite excellent, but very traumatizing and I swore I would never watch it again. Hilary Swank definitely deserved that Oscar award.

22. Weirdest movie you’ve ever seen?
Can’t remember.

23. Scariest movie?
Night of the Living Dead . . . scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

24. Funniest movie?
The Gods Must Be Crazy
